Missing Maluta

For a couple weeks I've been trying to reach Ray Maluta, the former Amerk and current general manager of the ESL Centre. I've left multiple voicemails but have yet to hear back.

I've been hoping to talk to Maluta about Steve Donner and his relationship with the centre. It's becoming very hard to look into Donner's exact role at the centre, and especially it's slide into debt. I'm sure David Christa plays into the whole situation as well, but I'm not likely to land an interview with him, either.

Anyway, does anyone know how Maluta, an ex-hockey player, landed the GM job at the ESL Centre? Did he have any management experience at all, or was his appointment basically cronysim? I'm very curious to know if Donner had a hand in getting Maluta the job. If Maluta feels indebted to Donner, that might explain Maluta's failure to call me back.

  • Every problem and issue with that facility is a direct result of Ray Maluta and Advanced Arenas. As long as those two parties are involved, the building will always continue to struggle. Ray Maluta is an awful manager.

  • Hey Ryan, the reason Ray hasn't returned your phone call is because he's never there. Honestly, you will never see the guy. How can you run a building like that?

  • NONE OF YOU KNOW THE REAL STORY. MAYBE HE HASN'T ANSWERED YOU CUZ HE DOESN'T WANT TO STOOP TO YOUR LEVEL AND BE AS PETTY AS YOU ALL ARE BEING. MAYBE IF THE REGULAR PLAYERS AND PARENTS RESPECTED THE FACILITY AND DIDN'T TRASH THEIR OWN HOME RINK IT WOULD HELP OUT THE HARD WORKING EMPLOYEES KEEP THE PLACE LOOKING GOOD. EVERY TIME I'M THERE I SEE YOUNG KIDS RUNNING AROUND BRAKING THINGS WHILE THE PARENTS ARE EITHER IN THE BAR OR NOT THERE AT ALL.

  • all three of these responses are right, the reason people treat the facility like they do is because Maluta does not care what happens so why should his staff? there is no top down leadership and never will be with Maluta becasue he does not want confrontation or exposure to what he is doing to line his own pockets. Plus how do you expect him to run the place when he is never there on weekends, leaves for long periods of time to coach his travel team, the USA hockey sled team and spends all summer playing golf with his USA hockey buddies, who by the way he gives away the ice time for dirt cheap? Advanced Arena's will continue to mismanage the place because why should they care, they make over 300k a year in fees. plus they own the bar and the pro shop, it is just a cash cow for them. and as long as they keep giving Jack driscoll money for his political campaigns they are going to keep the cash cow flowing. You people need to wake up and ask why the facility looks like it is 30 years old when it is not even 10 yet! There are a lot of issue with the rink and they need commited people to sovle them, not a group from Chicago that cares nothing for the facility or the people of this community.

  • I agree. Maluta is very bad. Advanced Arenas is bad. Doesn't the county have a say in what goes on in that facility? I remember hearing they were involved to some capacity. Anyways. Get rid of the two, hire someone who can change it around and bring the respect factor up. It's a great building that has brought many great things to the community. It wouldn't take too much work or even money to change it around.

  • Most of these comments are not aligned with truth. If you expect to "see" Ray managing the building, then you will be disappointed, because I'm sure there is much work done that is not visible. His youth and sled team coaching are a great way for him to keep in touch with the needs of the ice customer, and the value he adds to the teams that he coaches is significant. The kids he has coached are better players and people because of the experience, and he has a lot of hockey knowledge. His teams are very successful and he knows how to coach. Check the banners in the restaurant and you will learn that his teams have defeated some good clubs over the years. Personally I think that our community is fortunate to have him managing our largest ice facility and coaching our kids.
