Whoa whoa whoa

I'm gonna step in here and address comments posted by readers on my last entry. Specifically, I'm somewhat dismayed by the use of the terms "idiot" and "moron" referencing another poster.

When it comes to this blog, I have always fostered the idea of "anything goes." No matter what your opinion, regardless of how wacky or controversial, you can express it here. In fact, I WANT you to do so. Discussion of the issues facing Rochester sports is of vital importance if we want to make things better. With such discussion comes disagreement, and I personally love disagreement, and I want my readers to express it when they read something they disagree with.

However, I also believe that disagreement, no matter how heated or vigorous, should always be conducted with respect for each other's opinions and writing styles. That means no name-calling or insulting comments.

Wait, I take that back. You can call ME whatever you want. That's fine with me. Believe me, I've received my share of criticism as a journalist over the last 15 years.

I believe it's likewise OK to call public figures names, because they put themselves out in the public and should be prepared for public rebuke. So, if want to, say, call a local pro sports owner an idiot or a liar, hey, go for it.

But, readers, please, DO NOT call each other names. Please express your opinions in other, more respectful and productive ways. If you think someone's opinion is absurd or way off-base, then express your disgreement in a civil manner by relating your own opinion, not by lobbing insults at other readers.

Like I said, I encourage any and all disagreement, but only when it is civil and respectful. It's OK to be angry and pissed off — it's pretty much my natural state — and I want you all to express and vent that anger here. But just do it in a non-hurtful way.

Readers are the lifeblood of this blog, and I am grateful for every single one of you. You are ALL welcome here. But I'm guessing the majority of this blog's readers are not public figures, and I want you all to feel comfortable enough to submit your own comments.

That doesn't happen if we call each other names. So please, please be respectful of each other.
