Frontier Field and the D&C

It's been noted to me this week that the Democrat & Chronicle HAS, in fact, written about all the politics surround the construction and operation of Frontier Field. The paper wrote a whole series of articles on the subject back in 1998.

So, I suppose, I stand somewhat corrected. However ... 1998?!?!?! That was 10 years ago! A lot has happened since then.

Actually, in a way, not much has happened, because the situation at Frontier Field has stayed pretty much the same over the last decade — it's still losing money, it's still not paying taxes, it's still owed by a politically-connected development corporation, it's still run by a private company that's given thousands of dollars to the county executive's campaign coffers.

The public needs to be updated about Frontier Field, and badly.

I should also note that those 1998 stories were co-written by Michael Caputo, who was simply the best political reporter the D&C has had in many, many years. It's no mystery why the paper's political coverage has tanked since his departure. (Caputo is now working for public radio in Minnesota, I think.)

The D&C sorely needs someone like Caputo again. But that pretty much goes without saying.
