RSG mayoral campaign donations

Last week I headed downtown to check out some legal documents at the County Clerk's office. It usually takes Clerk's staffers a couple hours to dig out requested files, so while I was waiting, I sauntered across the hall to the Monroe County Board of Elections office.

To pass the time, and to satisfy some nagging curiosity, I looked over the fundraising disclosure forms for the mayoral campaigns of Bill Johnson and Bob Duffy to see if anyone at the Rochester Sports Group had donated any money to their campaigns.

Surprisingly, the disclosure forms I looked at for Johnson's campaigns — I went back to 2001 — indicated no donations from the Rhinos.

However, Steve Donner gave $625 in April 2001, which was surprising, because that was the first Donner donation to high-ranking local officials that I've come across.

In addition, the Amerks donated $2,000 to Johnson's campaign in February 2002. Again, that was surprising, because I've only comes across a handful of other donations from the Amerks, and none of them were nearly as much as $2,000.

(Also of interest was a $2,500 donation to Johnson from SMG, the firm that runs Blue Cross Arena — and that is most likely to be fired when its contract with the city expires in June.)

As far as Duffy's campaign coffers go, the Amerks gave $1,500 to him in November 2005. In addition, FB DuRoss Associates have $2,500 one month earlier. That's the first time I've seen "FB DuRoss Associates" as a donor to local politicians.

DuRoss — this time as an individual donor — gave another $2,500 to Duffy in March 2006. That's $5,000 total, but apparently five grand doesn't buy what it used to — instead of supporting the Rhinos during their current crisis, Duffy is now trying to take over their stadium AND trigger a state audit of their finances. How's that for gratitude?

Anyway, on a lark, I also checked the disclosure reports for the other candidates who ran against Duffy in 2005. Apparently in an effort to hedge his bets, DuRoss gave $1,000 to Wade Norwood, Duffy's main opposition.

It should be noted that Duffy raised a Rochester mayoral record of more than $10.7 million during his campaign. That's mind-boggling.
